Untapped Energy Efficiency Benefits of High-Performance Conductors

High-performance conductors (HPCs) offer superior performance compared to conventional conductors, including greater energy efficiency, transfer capacity, and reduced thermal sag. This report analyzes real-world data from eight diverse projects and finds that energy savings from reduced line losses alone can offset the higher upfront cost of HPCs in as little as 1.3 years, with payback periods ranging from 1.3 to 10 years—compared to expected project lifetimes of 30 years or more.

Transmission owners today generally limit consideration of HPCs to reconductoring projects or projects with extreme engineering challenges, such as tight clearance requirements. This analysis shows that HPCs’ energy efficiency benefits can make them cost-effective across a much broader range of transmission projects than is currently recognized.
