60+ Organizations Call for “Demonstrable Progress” Toward Enactment of Clean Energy Tax Platform Before State of the Union Address

WASHINGTON, D.C. – More than 60 diverse stakeholders, including environmental organizations, faith groups, clean energy, energy efficiency and transportation associations, wrote to Senator Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi last week calling for “demonstrable progress” toward enactment of the Build Back Better Act’s climate and clean energy provisions before President Biden’s State of the Union Address on March 1.

The coalition said these provisions represent Congress’ last, best chance to tackle climate change, adding that the time to act is now.

“For the planet to have a chance at maintaining acceptable climate conditions by staying within 1.5 degrees Celsius of additional warming, immediate action is necessary to transition our economy to a clean energy future. This need has only grown more urgent with the passing of time. Failure is not an option; we simply cannot afford to watch any more years, months, or legislative opportunities go by without enacting bold climate action into law,” the coalition wrote.

The coalition noted that the robust set of clean energy and transportation incentives assembled earlier in the 117th Congress would benefit every U.S. state by unleashing unprecedented economic gains, easing longer-term inflationary pressures, employing millions of Americans in family-sustaining jobs, promoting environmental justice, ensuring healthier communities and enhancing our global competitiveness in the industries of the future.

“At this very moment, Congress is primed to deliver strong climate action for the nation. Further, we believe demonstrable progress towards enacting the best reconciliation bill for all Americans – including the Build Back Better Act’s climate and clean energy provisions – is possible by the State of the Union Address. We urge you to move quickly and stand ready to work with you to get this job done,” the signatories concluded.

American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE) President and CEO Gregory Wetstone added, “The climate and clean energy provisions in the Build Back Better Act will enable the renewable energy deployment that Americans want and scientists say we need to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. These provisions will drive economic growth across the United States, creating hundreds of thousands of jobs and generating hundreds of billions of dollars in economic activity. ACORE is proud to join this diverse array of organizations, and the American people, in calling for near-term enactment of this historic measure.”
