Washington, D.C. – Today, at a United Nations ceremony in New York, Secretary of State John Kerry signed the Paris climate deal that resulted from global negotiations at December’s COP21. This steps moves the United States closer to bringing the agreement into force and marks an important unification of nations to collectively address the threat of climate change.

The American Council On Renewable Energy (ACORE) represents over 200 major companies and players in the renewable energy industry, and today applauds the United States’ action to back the Paris climate deal.

“The Paris Agreement is a historic achievement, and today’s signing officially affirms the global commitment to a renewable energy economy” said Gregory Wetstone, President and CEO of the American Council On Renewable Energy. “We congratulate President Obama, and the long list of world leaders who came together in support of this vital effort. Now comes the hard part, where each nation must meet its ‘nationally determined contribution.’ One of the most cost-effective and expeditious ways to meet our greenhouse emission reduction targets is through greater deployment of renewable energy.  We are off to a good start here in the U.S., where new renewable energy capacity has exceeded new fossil fuel capacity since 2008. In fact, the renewable energy sector now employs far more Americans than the coal sector.  But this is only the beginning. The renewable sector stands ready to continue its dramatic growth, and has a critical role to play in meeting the Paris commitments.”

ACORE will host its annual Renewable Energy Finance Forum-Wall Street (REFF-Wall Street) on June 12-22, 2016 in New York, NY to discuss the latest trends in clean energy finance, and propose ways in which the renewable energy industry can accelerate its contributions to carbon reduction and energy infrastructure built-out here in the United States and abroad.
