Google Purchases Enough Renewable Energy To Match Its Global Operations in 2017

For Immediate Release – December 6, 2016

Washington, D.C.—The American Council On Renewable Energy (ACORE) applauds Google on today’s announcement that the company will reach its goal of powering its global operations – including data centers and offices - with 100% renewable energy in 2017.

“I am delighted to celebrate this huge milestone with one of ACORE’s leading member companies,” said Gregory Wetstone, ACORE’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “Google has been committed to large-scale, long-term renewable energy contracts for many years – and its paying off. This impressive early achievement of Google’s 100% renewable energy goal is a definitive demonstration that renewable energy is cost-effective and readily available at scale today.” A key factor in such a rapid progress is that the cost of wind and solar technologies have decreased by 60 percent and 80 percent, respectively, over the last six years. As a result, renewable energy projects have delivered increasingly affordable and reliable power across the globe.

Google is now the largest corporate renewable energy buyer in the world, with 20 agreements reaching 2.6 gigawatts (GW) of wind and solar energy. These contracts will generate more than $3.5 billion in capital investments. The company affirmed that reaching 100% renewable energy purchasing is just the beginning and it will continue to aggressively move forward with renewable energy technologies. “ACORE looks forward to working with Google, and our many other outstanding members, to continue to promote increased investment and deployment of renewable energy in the coming year,” added Wetstone.
