Canada and the United States have a strong bilateral energy relationship and the two nations are working closely together on several areas related to renewable energy and energy efficiency.
In February 2009, President Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper launched the U.S.-Canada Clean Energy Dialogue (CED) to encourage the development of clean energy technologies to reduce greenhouse gases and combat climate change in both countries.
One of the areas where the bilateral cooperation has been most successful is with hydroelectric. Current ongoing partnerships between U.S. and Canadian parties include The Northern Pass Project between Hydro-Quebec and New Hampshire, the Champlain Hudson Express with New York City, and the Great Northern Transmission Line between Manitoba and Minnesota. Opportunities for the further development of partnerships with Canadian hydroelectric companies are promising.
