International Initiative

South Korea

With a lack of domestic resources, South Korea is largely dependent on foreign imports of non-renewable energy resources to meet its energy needs. In 2011, less than one percent of the country’s total energy consumption came from renewable sources. With a goal for renewable energy to provide 11 percent of the national energy consumption by 2030, the South Korean government is placing a large emphasis on renewable energy development and research in order to meet the challenges of climate change.
