South Africa

South Africa’s current energy portfolio is dominated by hydrocarbons, particularly coal which accounts for 70 percent of the nation’s energy consumption. As a result, South Africa has become the largest carbon dioxide emitter in Africa and the 12th largest in the world. But it is also emerging as a significant market for renewable energy, and the prospects toward the establishment of a successful renewable energy industry in South Africa are bright.

The Republic of South Africa’s Department of Energy set a target of 10 000GWh of energy to be produced from renewable energy sources (mainly from biomass, wind, solar and small-scale hydro) by 2013. To help reach its renewable energy goals, the nation has been investing billions in renewable energy this year.

ACORE has an interest in promoting and expanding the renewable energy industry in South Africa and building lasting relationships between the industries in South Africa and the U.S.
